About AST Hypnotherapy and EMDR on Maui
It is possible to leave a childhood which may have included abuse, neglect and other insults behind in the past. With effective therapy, these become memories which no longer cause disturbance through triggers and out of balance emotional reactions. Major traumatic events such as childhood abuse, automobile accidents, combat, crime and natural disasters, as well as experiences where your needs were not met, can also be reprocessed and safety restored. Many addictive patterns originate in traumatic memory and EMDR also has an addiction protocol to treat compulsive eating or help prevent relapse in cases of addiction.
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with certifications in Hypnotherapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and credentialing in Internal Family Systems spanning over 20 years of experience. I practice the EMDR 8 step protocol with eye movements as taught by Francine Shapiro and the EMDR Institute and have full EMDR International Association certification. In sessions, I help you to explore the origin of current issues and facilitate deep emotional clearing and transformation of thinking patterns. When trauma and negative life experiences are reprocessed and re-framed, thoughts and emotions automatically become more positive. My client centered, therapeutic approach is thorough, addressing pertinent sources, healing past and present while reinforcing desired future outcomes, and attending to mind, body and spirit.
Hypnotherapy is an effective, evidence based treatment when practiced by a properly trained clinician. A meta-analysis of 133 studies showed a 74% success rate among those receiving hypnotherapy, compared to 27% for those untreated. I completed a one year certification course in 1994 with Irv Katz PhD, Chancellor Of IUPS and former chairman of the University of Nevada Department of Psychology. He worked with Drs Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls and Carl Rogers.
EMDR has strong evidence as an effective trauma treatment, shown in over 24 randomized clinical trials. EMDR is thus approved by the VA, NIH and WHO for trauma. I have had the good fortune to study with some of the foremost experts in the trauma field. At the EMDR Institute I trained with Sue Rogers PhD co-author of Light in the Heart of Darkness: EMDR and the Treatment of War and Terrorism Survivors and Curtis Rouanzoin PhD, co-director of The Traumatic Stress Network and past president of EMDRIA. I was under supervision with Elizabeth West for EMDRIA certification.
42 hours of continuing education training with Dr. Van der Kolk's, The Trauma Center at JRI followed. I completed the 12th Hawai'i International Training Summit on Preventing, Assessing & Treating Trauma Across the Lifespan. I have completed further advanced training in complex trauma with Jim Knipe PhD, author of The EMDR Toolbox. IFS trainings in Austin Texas and Florida rounded out my tools to help clients recover.
My other activities include 35 years of yoga practice, writing poetry and snorkeling in the ocean almost daily. Underwater and sunset photography are among my favorite hobbies.
